Memphis weather: Live updates on power outages, roads, closures and more

The last of the wintery blast has almost exited the Memphis area.

National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologist Todd Beal said the third round of freezing rain will keep moving through the area Thursday morning, but has shifted south into North Mississippi. By Thursday night the area will see clearing.

"The precipitation will be ending and then it's a pretty benign weekend, weather-wise, with a gradual warming trend," Beal said. "So we're not expecting any precipitation through the weekend and by Sunday, our temperatures will be back in the middle 50s."

Most of the Memphis area had already seen about one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation by Tuesday morning. As of 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, the Memphis area had received four-tenths of an inch of mixed winter precipitation, including two-tenths of an inch of snow, according to the NWS.

As the winter weather persisted, local schools canceled classes for the third day in a row and Memphis Police Department continued its inclement weather crash policy.

MSCS, Millington schools to remain closed Friday

Memphis-Shelby County Schools will remain closed Friday for a fourth day due to icy weather. The district cited dangerous conditions for bus routes and students who walk to school. Activities before and after school are also canceled, marking a second Friday in a row of canceled games.

Most municipal districts are returning to class Friday after a three-day closure. Only Millington Municipal School District is closed Friday.

Most Millington students in the district ride the bus to school, Superintendent Bo Griffin said, and road conditions are not expected to improve overnight, he said.

All other Shelby County municipal districts are returning to school Friday:

  • Bartlett City Schools

  • Collierville Schools

  • Germantown Municipal School District Lakeland School System

  • Lakeland School System

In North Mississippi, DeSoto County Schools has canceled classes for Friday.

Power outages

As of 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Memphis Light, Gas and Water was reporting 453 outages, which were affecting about 10,163 customers. Earlier in the day, outages were impacting 20,281 customers.

MLGW community offices are closed Thursday. MLGW’s call center will remain open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

In North Mississippi, Northcentral Electric Cooperative reported 82 outages, affecting 2,763 customers, around 9:20 a.m.

Around 7 a.m., Northcentral said on twitter that the area can "expect to see assistance from 4 County, Pontotoc and Northeast." At 10 a.m. they shared that crews from Pontotoc Electric and North East Power had arrived and 4 County Electric crews were on their way.

Road conditions

Hazardous driving conditions continued into Thursday morning and Beal warned the roads could refreeze Thursday night.

"If there's any lingering moisture on the roads, in areas that did not have opportunity to completely thaw out, roads, bridges, overpasses could potentially refreeze tonight as our temperatures fall back into the 20s," Beal said.

A low of 25 is forecasted in the Memphis area Thursday night into Friday morning.

Wednesday's updates

Memphis-area school closures for Thursday

Memphis-Shelby County Schools has canceled classes for Thursday, a third day in a row due to icy weather.

Shelby County's municipal school districts announced closures for Thursday as well. Here are the suburban districts closed Thursday:

  • Arlington Community Schools

  • Bartlett City Schools

  • Collierville Schools

  • Germantown Municipal School District

  • Lakeland School System (after-school activities have not been decided on yet)

  • Millington Municipal Schools

DeSoto County Schools also canceled classes for Thursday.

Rhodes College expects to have a delayed start at noon Thursday.

All University of Memphis Shelby County locations and the Lambuth campus in Jackson will be closed Thursday. All on-campus activities are postponed or canceled. In-person classes are canceled, but students should look for communication from instructors regarding operational details for each course, such as if they will be done in a remote format. Online courses will continue as scheduled.

Southwest Tennessee Community College classes and operations will remain virtual on Thursday. All on-campus activities and events are canceled.

Power outages

As of 3:26 p.m. Wednesday, Memphis Light, Gas and Water was reporting 31 outages, which were affecting 248 customers. That was well down from a peak of about 5,000 customers affected at one point Tuesday morning.

The utility's community offices are closed Wednesday due to the weather and will reopen Thursday if weather permits, MLGW said. The call center is open Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Road conditions

Hazardous driving conditions continued into Wednesday morning with ice reported on major highways and bridges. Nichole Lawrence, West Tennessee community relations officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said roads had a mix of snow, ice, black ice and wet pavement on them.

A TDOT map showed reports of snow and ice dotted across Shelby County roadways.

Tigers game postponed

Wednesday night's Memphis Tigers women’s basketball game against Houston has been postponed. Both teams will evaluate their remaining schedules regarding a potential rescheduled date.

Clinics closing

The weather also forced the closure of several clinics across the area. All University Clinical Health/UT clinics are closed Wednesday, according to University Clinical Health. The Shelby County Health Department's clinics were also closed on Wednesday.

The VA's outpatient clinics will also be closed until at least noon on Wednesday, with appointments to be rescheduled.

Airport sees more cancelations, delays

Memphis International Airport saw more flights canceled or delayed on Wednesday. The airport website showed eight departing flights had been canceled and four were delayed. Nineteen incoming flights were canceled with another 10 delayed.

The airport's Consolidated Deicing Facility saw frequent use Tuesday and Wednesday, the airport said.

City facilities closed

Multiple City of Memphis facilities were closed Wednesday. Those closed facilities included municipal courts, city clerk's offices, Memphis Public Library branches, community centers and senior centers.

The Commercial Appeal's delivery delayed

Because of dangerous driving conditions on ice-covered roads, Wednesday's print edition will be delayed for some subscribers but most will receive Wednesday's edition with the delivery of their Thursday newspaper. Carriers are working to ensure delivery when it is safe to do so.

Germantown garbage pickup delayed

Solid waste collection in Germantown will be delayed for the rest of the week due to the ice storm.

"Due to the inclement weather and in interest of worker safety, Waste Pro has decided to suspend all solid waste collection for Wednesday, February 1. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week," the city said.

MATA adjusts services due to ice storm

The Memphis Area Transit Authority enacted the following changes on Wednesday due to the ice storm.

  • Fixed Route services will be suspended at 11 a.m.

  • MATAplus will only do life-sustaining trips.

  • Transit Centers will be open from 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

  • On–Demand services are suspended.

  • Trolley services are suspended.

The district’s school board meeting has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Memphis police implement inclement weather crash policy

Memphis Police Department implemented the inclement weather crash policy Tuesday until further notice.

Officers will not respond to most crashes that occur during the icy conditions. MPD advises drivers to exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information and tag numbers.

They also ask motorists to take photos of the damage and to report the accident within five days to the nearest Memphis police station or Memphis Police Traffic Office.

Power outages

Memphis Light, Gas and Water reported about 5,000 customers without power beginning Monday evening into Tuesday morning. As of about 8 p.m. p.m. Tuesday, the number of outages stood at 35 with about 560 customers affected.

On Tuesday afternoon, it was bracing for the second round of winter weather.

MLGW said since the ice storm in February 2022, the company has trimmed 426 miles of tree lines, replaced 692 wooden poles, replaced 22 substation circuit breakers, replaced more than 13.5 miles of underground cables and installed 124 distribution automation devices.

MLGW's offices closed at 3 p.m. Tuesday. In addition, the utility's board of commissioners meeting has been postponed from Wednesday morning to Feb. 10.

Northcentral Electric Cooperative, which serves North Mississippi including DeSoto County, reported about 1,729 customers without power in Olive Branch as of 5:28 p.m. Tuesday. The electric company said crews are working to restore power as soon as possible.

MATA makes changes to Wednesday service

Memphis Area Transit Authority is making notable changes to its operations Wednesday due to the inclement weather. On Tuesday afternoon, it announced this plan:

  • Fixed Route services will operate on a Saturday schedule service level.

  • Ready! Services will be available from 6:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

  • MATAplus will only do life-sustaining trips from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

  • Transit Centers will be open from 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

  • Trolley services suspended until further notice.

Riders are asked to allow for additional travel time as there may be additional delays as bus operators proceed cautiously on the roads.

Memphis restaurants closed on Wednesday

The following restaurants will be closed on Wednesday due to road conditions: Sunrise Memphis (both locations), Napa Cafe, Chef Tam's Underground Cafe, Lulu's Cafe & Bakery, Sweet LaLa's Bakery and City & State coffee shop.

Collierville, Bartlett, Germantown announce weather closures

Germantown City Hall will be closed Wednesday. City staff will work on-site and remotely to continue offering all essential services.

Germantown Municipal Court will not hold court sessions Wednesday. Court staff will send letters notifying everyone of their new court date. For more information about Germantown Municipal Court, call (901) 757-7212 or email GermantownCourt@Germantown-TN.gov.

The Germantown Community Library also will be closed Wednesday.

Germantown sanitation pickup remains regular as of Tuesday morning.

City of Bartlett offices and facilities will be closed on Wednesday. Trash pickup for Wednesday will be delayed until Thursday. All trash pickup will delayed one day this week, and recycling is closed Wednesday. Bartlett City Courts will also be closed Wednesday.

Collierville Town Hall will close at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and the Collierville Library will close at 3 p.m. Collierville has not announced closures for Wednesday.

Memphis warming center opens

The City of Memphis opened an emergency warming center at 8 p.m. Monday at Greenlaw Community Center, 190 Mill Ave. The warming center will run until 8 a.m. Thursday.

People needing a ride to the warming center can contact MATA at 901-297-1680.

MSCS postpones optional school application date

MSCS has postponed its school choice application opening for optional schools, originally scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m.

The school choice portal will now open next week, at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6.

The district cited power outages from the storm in its decision to delay the application process, which can be time-sensitive for new applications.

A school choice fair is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hickory Ridge Towne Centre.

Replacement deadlines for next steps in the school choice process were not announced Tuesday.

Malco theaters closing early Tuesday

Several Malco theaters will close early due to the weather.

These locations will close after the 4 p.m. sets, with no evening shows:

  • Stage Road

  • Ridgeway

  • Cordova

  • Forest Hill

  • Wolfchase

These location will be open through the 7 p.m. shows, with no 9 p.m. or later shows:

  • Paradiso

  • Collierville

  • DeSoto

  • Olive Branch

  • Studio

  • Powerhouse

Museums and more

The Memphis Zoo is closed Tuesday, but has yet to determine if it will open Wednesday.

Graceland closed mid-day, but a decision has not been made about Wednesday.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Museum of Science and History, the National Civil Rights Museum are always closed on Tuesdays, and have yet to determine if they will open Wednesday.

The Metal Museum is closed Tuesday and uncertain if it will reopen Wednesday.

The Dixon Gallery & Gardens is open Tuesday and will determine whether to close as events warrant.

Memphis-area road conditions on Tuesday morning

The Memphis Office of Emergency Management tweeted Tuesday morning to use caution while driving as the roads could be frozen with black ice. There have also been reports on Twitter of crashes on both sides of Westbound I-40 over the Wolf River Bridge.

The Big River Crossing Bridge will be closed to pedestrians and bikers due to the weather, the city of Memphis said. The closure will be in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

In North Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation tweeted that there are reports of ice on roads and bridges in DeSoto and Tunica counties and to use caution on the roads.

Collierville Police Department reported some icy road conditions as well as a crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 269 at Tennessee 385. The town notified Tennessee Department of Transportation and advises motorists to avoid the area.

Other municipalities including Germantown, Bartlett, Lakeland and Arlington have not reported ice on the roads but ask drivers to be wary.

Memphis airport sees some delays, cancellations

Things were generally running smoothly at Memphis International Airport Tuesday morning but there were a few delayed or canceled flights. Southwest had canceled three of its five scheduled flights for the day as of 7:30 a.m. Early Delta and American flights to New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Boston were delayed.

One American flight and three Southwest flights scheduled to come into Memphis Tuesday had been canceled as of 7:30 and several other arriving flights from all over the country were delayed.

City of Memphis closures

Due to the weather, the city Treasury Office will only accept electronic payments and the Memphis Housing Authority’s central office is closed all day Tuesday. Waste services may also be delayed.

"Customers are asked to present their carts this week on their scheduled collection day. City and contractor crews will evaluate route conditions daily and restore services as soon as it can be done safely. It may take until Saturday, February 4, to restore some routes. Please leave your garbage and recycle carts at the curb until collected," the city said.

City ice and snow removal efforts will continue through Wednesday, utilizing 14 salt, sand and brine trucks.

Some Memphis restaurants will be closed Tuesday

While many Memphis restaurants opened earlier in the day, restaurants started announcing closures for Tuesday's dinner service mid-afternoon.

Huey's closed all locations at 3 p.m. All Memphis-area Corky's restaurants closed at 5 p.m. All Central BBQ locations are also closed Tuesday.

Italian restaurants Ciao Bella and Pete & Sam's are closed Tuesday night. Cocozza American Italian is offering takeout only, from 3-6 p.m. The dining room is closed, and the restaurant will close at 6 p.m.

Andrew Michael, Hog & Hominy and Catherine & Mary's also announced they would be closed Tuesday. The restaurants plan to reopen Wednesday, if the weather permits.

Bari Ristorante also is closed on Tuesday night, so is Paulette's and its sister restaurant, Terrace at the River Inn.Restaurant Iris, Panta, The Second Line and Fino's are all closed Tuesday evening.

Several Memphis bars, including Cameo, Bar Ware and Max's Sports Bar, are open Tuesday night.

VA closes clinics

The outpatient clinics at the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr. VA Medical Center will be closed until noon Wednesday, the VA said. That includes the clinics in Helena and Jonesboro, Arkansas and Covington, Jackson, Nonconnah, and Dyersburg, Tennessee. Appointments will be rescheduled. The VA Medical Center in Memphis will remain operational for emergency care.

Municipal Courts closed Tuesday

The City of Memphis announced Municipal Courts will be closed to the public Tuesday. Anyone scheduled for court should contact the clerk’s office for their rescheduled court date at 901-636-3400.

Stax Museum event postponed

Stax Museum of American Soul Music has postponed its Monday evening event featuring Valerie June. A rescheduled date will be announced later.
