Community leaders will meet Thursday morning on the campus of Silverado High School in Victorville to exhibit “mob-like” tactics as they encourage students that “It’s Cool to go to School.”

“We’re inviting those attending to dress up and help greet our students at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday,” said Frank Kelly of Victorville, the founder/CEO of the No Drugs America Association. “It’s important that our youth know we support them as they pursue their education.”

Kelly, who has worked in substance prevention for decades, attended the first “Men Mob” meeting nearly seven years ago in Adelanto.

In Oct. 2015, some 1,700 Adelanto High School students walked onto the school campus and were greeted by the first-ever High Desert “Men Mob.”

One school administrator at that time said one student who was greeted by the “Mob” stated that he “felt so important” as he was welcomed by men in suits on his way to a regular school day.

More than three dozen men of “The Fellas,” an informal group of service leaders, sparked the Adelanto event after previously visiting schools in Fontana, Riverside, and San Bernardino.

The “Mom Mob” was created after a few local women were inspired by online photos and videos of “Men Mobs” in action.

The women first came together as part of the Positive Alternative Choices for Kids Coalition. The coalition hosts school greeting activities at High Desert schools to “motivate and increase students’ desire to stay in school and learn all they can in school.”

Over the years, local “Men Mobs” and “Mom Mobs” have offered high-fives and chanted “It’s cool to stay in school” as students walked through school entrances at various high schools in the High Desert.

Mob members have included mayors, council members, hospital CEOs, school superintendents, city managers, business leaders, pastors, firefighters, sheriffs, and county officials.

The Mobs will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at Silverado High School, located at 14048 Cobalt Road in Victorville.
