Detectives say the boy was waiting at a bus stop when a man pulled up in a van and told him to get in.
LIZ CHO: Parents in Nassau County are on alert this afternoon after police say a man tried to kidnap a young boy. Investigators say two men tried to lure a 10-year-old into their van as he waited for the school bus. It happened in the village of Russell Gardens. Eyewitness News reporter Stacey Sager is live there with the details. Stacey?
STACEY SAGER: Well, Liz, you know, police here in Nassau County really want some help on this one. This happened yesterday morning-- around 8:25 yesterday morning, as this 10-year-old boy was just walking up his block to his bus stop for school. But one thing is clear, the boy did handle this precisely as he should.
Police canvassing the area surrounding Melbourne Street and South Middle Neck Road today. Russell Gardens, a tightly knit community in the area of Great Neck, where investigators now tell us a 10-year-old boy heading out to his school bus stop Thursday morning was suddenly approached by a grayish white utility van with two men.
RICHARD LEBRUN: At that time, they stopped. The occupant in the passenger side got out of the car and asked for the individual-- asked for the 10-year-old to please get into the car.
STACEY SAGER: The fourth grader instead ran home and told his mother, who called police. But the incident has left neighbors extremely worried.
SONIA BARONCI: It's scary and it's concerning. And we had a lot of conversations last night. And I had a nightmare, actually, about it.
- You don't feel safe anywhere now. So it's kind of upsetting.
STACEY SAGER: Most parents using the incident as a teachable moment, and so did police.
RICHARD LEBRUN: This 10-year-old did a great job, did a phenomenal job.
PETER KOH: And thankfully, you know, he wasn't chased or anything worse happened. So the main thing is, everyone's safe right now.
STACEY SAGER: And that is certainly good news. Now, police are asking residents to really check their Ring doorbells and their surveillance cameras. Just check for a whitish grayish utility van in this area around 8:25 yesterday morning. They really want help on this one.
