Menasha man who had 156,000+ images, videos of child pornography sentenced to 25 years

MENASHA, Wis. (WFRV) – A man from Menasha who reportedly had over 2.2 terabytes, equaling over 156,000 images and video, of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on his electronic devices was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.

According to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office, 35-year-old John D. Schaefer was sentenced to 300 months imprisonment for Production of Child Pornography and Distribution of Child Pornography.

Schaefer, a Menasha resident, reportedly showed his roommate in November 2022 a video that Schaefer made that depicted the abuse of a child who was roughly 15 months old. Further investigation revealed that Schaefer sexually assaulted the child while acting as a babysitter.

After seizing Schaefer’s electronic items, including the device that contained the video of the previously mentioned abuse, authorities reportedly found over 2.2 terabytes of CSAM.

During Schaefer’s sentencing hearing, Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach noted that Schaefer had over 156,000 images and videos that he possessed and distributed.

Schaefer will serve a lifetime on supervised release and must register as a sex offender under state and federal law following his 25-year prison sentence.

The case against Schaefer was investigated by the Menasha Police Department, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Oshkosh Police Department.

This case was also part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006, by the U.S. Department of Justice.
