Mendon girls win at Centreville

The Mendon girls had balanced scoring and picked up a 50-29 road win at Centreville on Friday night.

The Hornets scored just 24 points in a win earlier in the week over White Pigeon. That was more than doubled in Friday's win.

The Lady Hornets scored 16 points in the opening quarter in the game. Centreville had its highest-scoring quarter of the night as well with 11. Hailey Miller and Faith Edwards combined to score nine points in the opener for the Bulldogs.

The second quarter proved to be a big one for Mendon. The Lady Hornets got two triples from Brianna Heitkamp in the stanza and out-scored Centreville 13-4. This gave Mendon a 29-15 edge at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs were held to single-digit scoring in the third and fourth quarters. They posted eight in the third and six more in the fourth.

Mendon scored 12 in the third and nine more in the fourth.

The victory improves Mendon to 13-2 on the season, Centreville falls to 5-9. The Hornets connected on just 3-of-8 free throws, Centreville made 11-of-20.

Mendon was led by Jadyn Samson, she poured in 17 points with three rebounds and three steals.

Jenna Scheffler tossed in eight points with two rebounds. Makennah Mullin scored six points with seven rebounds and five assists, Heitkamp scored six points with nine rebounds and Cienna Nightingale added six points with three rebounds and two steals.

Presley Allen scored three points with five assists, Keyara Szymanski scored two points with three rebounds as well. Kayla Wenzel tossed in two points.

Lila Schinker grabbed two rebounds with two assists and two steals, Brielle Bailey grabbed one rebound with one assist.

Centreville got nine points from Edwards in the game, Miller scored eight and Paris Lugo added six. Drew Alexander tossed in four points, Emmy Pritchard added two.

Miller finished with seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists while Edwards totaled six rebounds and two steals.

Colon 55, Waldron 29

The Colon girls used an effective press and ran away from Walron on Friday night, 55-29.

“Our press was effective in getting us quick steals we could turn into points,” Colon coach Beth Preston said. “We moved the ball well and had balanced scoring throughout. We are starting to get other players involved and more consistently in the scoring column.”

Colon led 20-7 after one quarter and 30-16 at the break.

Colon out-scored Waldron 15-2 in the third quarter and 15-11 in the fourth.

Reese Williams led Colon with 18 points, five steals and four assists while Megann Mullins scored 12 points with four assists, four steals and seven total rebounds.

Allison Vinson chipped in with eight points, Kelsey Burgess tossed in six. Raegan Thaxton scored five points, Macey Burgess added four points with five rebounds and Lily Preston scored two.

On Saturday, the Lady Magi headed to take on Niles-Brandywine. It wasn't a good trip for Colon, which lost 64-30.

"Their press and half-court defense was stifling and we struggled to get anything going offensively," Preston said. "It's hard to replicate that kind of pressure in practice. We knew coming in they were going to really put a lot of pressure on the inbounds and trap the sidelines. You try and prepare for it, but it's a different beast when it's right there in front of you."

Brandywine jumped out to a 20-2 lead after one quarter of play. That lead grew again in the second quarter to 39-11 and 60-19 entering the fourth. Colon out-scored Brandywine 11-4 in the fourth.

Williams led with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists while Thaxton finished with seven. Mullins and Vinson both scored five points, Macey Burgess put in three points.

Three Rivers beats Edwardburg

The Three Rivers girls used a 19-10 run in the fourth quarter to pick up a 48-39 win over Edwardsburg on Friday night.

Gabby Charvat led Three Rivers with 18 points in the game. Allie McGlothlen tossed in 11 and Annabelle Gill scored eight points for the Cats in the win.

Cass beats Marcellus

The Cassopolis girls beat Marcellus 42-38 on Friday nigh in overtime. Marcellus put up 12 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to nearly pull off the win.

Brooklyn VanTilburg led the Lady Cats with 14 points in the game. Ladora BetSargis tosed in nine points while Talan Hiemstra added six points. Olivia Hicks scored three points while Clare Flory, Addie Curtis and Sophia Affriseo all had two points.

VanTilburg brought in eight rebounds with three assists in the game. Hicks brought in 10 rebounds in the game. BetSargia, Flory and Affriseao each recorded six rebounds.

Parchment 33, Constantine 27

Parchment edged Constantine 33-27 in prep hoops action on Friday night.

The Falcons were led by Bella Cullifer with seven points and six rebounds, Olivia Herlein added six points with four steals and three rebounds.

Jaedyn Herlein tossed in five points with four rebounds, Sienna Salisbury added five points and six rebounds. Jenny Clewell scored four points with four rebounds and four steals.

Jackson Christian beats Burr Oak

The Burr Oak girls dropped a 46-33 decision to Jackson Christian on Thursday.

Braylyn Hernandez led the Bobcats with 17 points and five steals, Saryia Cornejo scored six points with seven rebounds. Makaila Whittington scored six points with three rebounds and three steals while Elaine Holtom added two points with three assists and two rebounds. Brooklynn Root scored two points as well while Isabella Boyd grabbed three rebounds and three steals.

Plainwell 62, Sturgis 23

Plainwell picked up a 62-23 win over Sturgis on Friday night.

“We started the game flat and turned it over too many times,” Sturgis coach Jeremy Bucklin said. “We did play better in the second half, it was just too much to overcome. We struggled to get good looks at the basket.”

Emily Schuller registered 10 points to lead Sturgis, she added eight rebounds and two blocks. Keyanna O’Tey scored six points with five rebounds, Rylee Carver put in four points. Kennedy Finnerman added two points with four rebounds, Riley Eicher made a free throw.
