Mendon girls win season's first game

The Mendon Hornets opened the hoops season with a win on Tuesday night.

It was the season opener for both Mendon and Union City, the Lady Hornets picked up the victory with a score of 49-17. Makennah Mullin had a big game for Mendon in the win, posting 12 points with 16 rebounds and two blocks. Payton Griffith finished with a game-high 17 points, she also swiped 13 steals with six assists and three rebounds.

Mendon took control of the game early in the opening half. The Lady Hornets out-scored Union City 12-2 in the first stanza and 13-7 in the second, leading 25-9 at halftime.

In the third, Mendon continued to cruise in the game. It out-scored Union City 15-3, pushing the lead out to 40-12 heading into the final quarter.

Mendon also got eight points, five rebounds and three steals from Alivia Stuart. Ryley Mullin scored six points while pulling in 10 rebounds, adding three steals and two assists, Chloe Behrends scored two points with two rebounds and two steals.

Bailey Lash also scored two points with four rebounds. Brianna Heitkamp scored two points, Presley Allen brought in a rebound and also handed out an assist.

River Valley 40, White Pigeon 21

A strong second half by River Valley proved to be the difference in a 40-21 win over White Pigeon in girl’s hoops on Tuesday.

It was the season opener for both squads.

“We played a good first half,” White Pigeon coach Jeff Baechler said. “Second half we had too many turnovers and just didn’t hit any shots. I was really proud of the girls’ effort. We have a lot of work to do and improve.”

White Pigeon led the game 7-6 after one quarter of play. Each team scored eight points in the second quarter, giving the Lady Chiefs a 15-14 edge at halftime.

River Valley out-scored White Pigeon 13-3 in both the third and fourth quarters.

Bailee Freedline led the Lady Chiefs with 10 points in the game, she also pulled in five rebounds.

Alex Hooker connected for four points, both Jaylee McBride and Taylor Wesolek chipped in with three points each. Rainie Atherton made a free throw.
