Mendon, TR girls open season with victories

The winter sport season for the MHSAA got underway on Tuesday evening.

Locally, there were three girls hoops teams which took to the hardwood.

Mendon 44, Union City 42

Mendon was able to open the season with a 44-42 victory over visiting Union City on Tuesday.

The two teams played to a 20-20 tie at halftime. The Hornets were then able to hang on for the win despite having a roster full of underclassmen.

The Hornets were led by junior Makennah Mullin in the game, however. She was the only Mendon player to finish in double figures with 15 points. Mullin hauled in four rebounds with four steals and four blocks in the victory for Mendon.

A pair of freshmen helped propel the Hornets to the win. Cienna Nightingale finished with nine points and seven rebounds in the game, Jadyn Samson totaled four points but added five steals, four rebounds and two assists in the game. Sophomores Brianna Heitkamp and Lila Schinker added big efforts as well for Mendon.

Heitkamp tossed in six points with seven rebounds, Schinker totaled four rebounds with four assists.

Both Jenna Scheffler and Keyara Szymanski scored two points, Szymanski blocked two shots.

Presley Allen scored six points for the Hornets. She totaled four steals, four assists and brought in three rebounds as well. Kayla Wenzel finished with four rebounds as well.

Mendon hosts Quincy on Friday.

Three Rivers beats Constantine

Three Rivers opened the hoops season with a home victory over Constantine on Tuesday.

The Wildcats won 52-15.

Leading Three Rivers in points was Dani Glass, she tossed in 12.

Gabby Charvat totaled 10 points for the Wildcats as well. The trio of Lanie Glass, Allie McGlothlen and Jennaya Decker all scored seven points.

Constantine got a team-high six points from Olivia Herlein in the contest. She swiped two steals as well. Megan Middleton scored four points. Sienna Salisbury added three points with six rebounds, Bella Cullifer scored two points with nine rebounds in the game.

Three Rivers will host Niles on Friday evening. Constantine travels to Brandywine.

In other local hoops action, Lawton beat Marcellus 64-21 on Tuesday.
