Menomonee Falls man dies in New Year's Day traffic crash, driver of other vehicle arrested

A 21-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after a 52-year-old Menomonee Falls man was killed in a two-car crash around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. The Falls man's parents were in the car and were injured.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the Menomonee Falls man as Craig Schimming.

The crash occurred at 9800 W. Good Hope Road in Milwaukee; both vehicles were traveling eastbound on Good Hope Road.

The striking vehicle, a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta, struck the rear of the victim's vehicle, a 2015 Toyota RAV4, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Schimming was in the passenger side while his father was driving and his mother was in the backseat. All three had seatbelts on, police said.

The victim's car was traveling within the 40 mph speed limit, police said, while the 21-year-old was traveling "egregiously over the speed limit, and the driver appeared to be intoxicated with a strong odor of alcohol noted."

The 21-year-old was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody. Schimming was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Schimming's parents are both in the Intensive Care Unit at Froedtert Hospital.

Police said the "road conditions were cold but clear of all obstructions, defects, and ice."

The crash remains under investigation.
