A men’s clothing shop is readying to open along a main corridor in NuLu.

Paxton’s, 709 E. Market St., is holding a grand opening on March 1 with merchandise for casual wear, the office and special occasions.

It’s the second NuLu boutique from owner Katie Meinhart, who opened Six Sisters Boutique at 804 E. Market St. in 2017.

The names of both businesses are nods to Meinhart’s family. The Louisville native is one of six sisters, and the new shop’s namesake is both her maternal grandfather and Meinhart’s 3-year-old son, Paxton John.

“He will tell you that’s his store and mommy has her store,” she said of her son.

Meinhart, who is also the president of the NuLu Business Association, said requests for menswear come in daily from Six Sisters Boutique visitors. Though she fully anticipated opening a children's boutique as her next retail venture, an unexpected leasing opportunity opened up nearby that "screamed men's store" with its high ceilings and exposed brick walls.

"There’s not enough menswear in Nulu, and there’s not a lot of men’s shopping in Louisville,” she said. "Being across from Corridor Bar and Garage Bar, it just felt like the right space for this."

She anticipates a mix of tourists and locals, as about 80% of customers at Six Sisters Boutique are tourists.

The storefront is formerly home to the NuLu location of Clique Boutique, which opened in late 2019 and closed last year. Last fall, Meinhart had to open up the space, removing interior walls and adding fitting rooms and a wet bar (for private events).

The shop will carry men’s clothing for both everyday wear and special occasions in addition to gifts and accessories. Its target market will be men ages 30-60 and will stock sizes small to XXL. With the Kentucky Derby on the horizon, the shop will have sport coats and a selection of hats and bow ties.

"We’re just getting started," Meinhart said of the Nulu district. "I’m very passionate about Nulu. It’s going to continue to grow.”

A grand opening is planned for March 1. Regular store hours, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 12-5 p.m. Sunday, start March 2.
