SINGAPORE — As the holiday season approaches and the festive spirit fills the air, an array of mental health-centric events are set to offer opportunities for deeper comprehension and personal growth.

These events offer a tapestry of diverse experiences, spanning from coffee and art workshops to charity shows, all dedicated to promoting mental well-being.

1. Tapestry Of Hope Giving Market

December commences with the "Tapestry Of Hope Giving Market", a collaborative effort led by Eagles Mediation and Counselling Centre (EMCC) alongside community partners. An integral part of the Tapestry of Hope campaign, the event seeks to raise awareness about mental health issues while supporting the subsidies fund.

The event offers various activities aimed at nurturing mental well-being, including mental health talks by EMCC's counsellors, workshops led by local artists, a photographic exhibit illustrating mental health journeys, curated products from local businesses, and a communal art display encouraging collective participation.

The Tapestry Of Hope Giving Market is set to take place on the 2 and 3 December (Saturday and Sunday) from 12pm to 8pm at Bras Basah Complex, #04-07, 231 Bain Street.

2. Coffee for Wellness Workshop by Flour Power

Within the Tapestry Of Hope Giving Market, Flour Power offers an engaging "Coffee for Wellness Workshop."

This interactive session explores coffee's positive effects on mental health. Attendees can participate in discussions, sensory experiences, and hands-on activities to learn about the science behind coffee and its potential benefits for mental well-being.

The workshop will provide practical tips for incorporating coffee into self-care routines, fostering mindfulness, and a deeper appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

The Coffee for Wellness Workshop by Flour Power will be held on Saturday (2 December) with two sessions available: from 12.30pm to 1pm, and from 1pm to 1.30 pm at Bras Basah Complex, #04-07, 231 Bain Street. Limited seats (10 pax per session) are available.

3. Balls of the Belles

Continuing the celebratory holiday mood, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is marking its 95th anniversary with a special charity show titled "Balls of the Belles."

Jointly presented by IMH and Dream Academy, this comedic sketch show, directed by Selena Tan and featuring an exclusive segment by Hossan Leong, promises an evening of laughter while supporting the Woodbridge Hospital Charity Fund.

Ticket sales for the show, ranging from $88 to $288, will contribute to various programmes aiding patients, caregivers and children through the fund.

Balls of the Belles is scheduled for Saturday, 9 December, at 8pm. It will be hosted at Capitol Theatre, 17 Stamford Road.

4. Art Appreciation Workshop

Aligned with the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre's annual SG Cares Giving Week, ARTualize invites individuals to an enlightening art appreciation workshop. This educational session imparts knowledge about art appreciation, and also serves as a charitable initiative.

The workshop, which includes theory and practical application, promises to donate 100 per cent of its proceeds to MacPherson CCC, supporting underprivileged residents.

The session will be held from 1 to 7 December at 3pm daily at ART@Grantral, Grantral Mall Macpherson, 01-18 (two-minute walk from Tai Seng MRT Exit B).

The link between mental health and overall well-being

1. What is mental health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a state of well-being that empowers individuals to effectively manage life's challenges, fulfil their potential, excel in learning and work, and actively contribute to their communities.

It represents a fundamental aspect of overall health and well-being, serving as the foundation for our capacity to make decisions, establish meaningful relationships, and shape the environment in which we live.

As stated by WHO, mental health is not only a basic human right but also a pivotal role in personal growth, community progress, and socio-economic development.

2. Why is mental health and wellness important?

It's crucial because it significantly affects our overall quality of life. Experts said that conditions like anxiety, stress, and depression do not just impact your mental state; they can also harm your physical health, potentially increasing your risk of conditions like heart disease and stroke.

As stated by the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is not only a fundamental human right but also plays a pivotal role in personal growth, community progress, and socio-economic development.
