Mentor Fire Department responds to chimney fire; Willoughby FD sends engine to assist

Dec. 10—A chimney fire occurred around 8:40 a.m. Dec. 10 on Hodgson Road in Mentor. Three Mentor stations responded, with the Willoughby Fire Department additionally sending one engine and a battalion chief.

Tom Keidel, a battalion chief with Mentor Fire Department, said crews were on site for about an hour, with most of that time spent putting out hot spots that could have potentially sparked another outbreak of fire.

"It was a chimney fire that extended outside of the chimney into some of the wall and up into the roof a little bit, on an addition on the back of the house." Keidel said. "We had quite a bit of overhaul we had to do to make sure we found all of the hot spots. Because it was kind of surrounded by the chimney on the outside of the house and on the inside, they had a brick wall also. So, it was kind of difficult to get to."
