Maybach was founded as an industrial engine manufacturer in 1909, first named Maybach in 1912, began to develop a car in 1919, unveiled its first production car in 1921, shuttered as a car manufacturer in 1940, acquired by Daimler in 1960, debuted as a new ultra-luxury manufacturer in 1997, sold its first cars as a new brand in 2002, and folded back into Mercedes as a sub-brand in 2015. The modern incarnation of Mercedes-Maybach, for whatever reason, has followed that production car unveil date to determine that 2021 is the hundredth anniversary of the brand. The celebration may be dubious, but the car honoring it is hard to argue with.

As a car, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Series 100 is no more special than the current V-12-powered Mercedes-Maybach S680. But a special edition of that car is still special, because that car happens to be a memorable monument to excess designed to bring the current S-Class up to the standard of the ultra-luxury competition at Rolls-Royce and Bentley without sacrificing the base car's commitment to cutting edge technology. The Series 100 comes in a distinct blue-silver two-tone (Cirrus Silver and Nautical Blue, specifically) and features a few commemorative plaques to note this car's connection to Maybach's third-most important founding anniversary. Other than that and some fittingly bespoke accessories, this is the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class you know already.

Mercedes-Maybach says that the hundredth anniversary of offering a production car for sale for the first time four or five company structures ago is also going to be the inspiration for a line of licensed luxury goods in the "Maybach the Peak" collection. The offerings includes a diamond-encrusted fountain pen and a series of champagne flutes from a prestigious silver manufacturer, so don't expect the Maybach brand to change direction any time soon. Be sure to grab those exclusive products while they last, though; Unless they do shift their goals again, Maybach only has three more hundredth anniversaries of a founding left.
