Mercer County woman dies Tuesday night in Hecht's Landing fire
Jan. 3—MONTEZUMA — A Mercer County woman perished Tuesday in a fire on the south side of Grand Lake St. Marys.
According to a press release issued by Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey, firefighters from the Montezuma, Coldwater and St. Marys township fire departments were dispatched to a structure fire at Hecht's Landing shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters from the Montezuma department arrived that 10-by-20 foot structure was fully engulfed in flames. It was subsequently learned that Vickie J. Schumm, 65, was inside the structure at the time of the blaze and died in the fire.
Grey said the State Fire Marshal's Office was contacted and investigators responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
