MercyOne to close Urbandale family medicine clinic, cites 'ongoing financial challenges’

MercyOne is closing its family medicine clinic in Urbandale.

The Catholic West Des Moines-based MercyOne Health System plans to close its family medicine clinic at 6200 NW Aurora Ave. in Urbandale in the near future, officials confirmed.

MercyOne pointed to issues with the building itself as well as other challenges facing health care broadly as the reason for the closure, but officials declined to share specific details.

"Structural challenges with the current building, paired with ongoing financial challenges facing health care, have led to making this change in the best interests of our patients and colleagues," MercyOne Spokesperson Todd Mizener said in a statement.

Patient care will not be interrupted, and the clinic providers will be moving to other MercyOne locations in the Des Moines metro area, Mizener said.

Mizener wouldn't reveal a closure date or share details of the health system's plans for the building.

"This decision aligns with a larger plan to address the economic realities of the fundamental shift in health care post-pandemic," Mizener said. "MercyOne is reducing costs and redistributing resources to ensure we continue to fulfill our Mission and focus on providing high-quality patient care."

MercyOne Health System is one of the largest health care systems in the region, operating 16 medical centers, 27 affiliate organizations and hundreds of health and wellness sites. Its annual operating revenues are more than $2.5 billion.

Last year, MercyOne was acquired by Trinity Health, a non-profit, Catholic health system based in Livonia, Michigan that operates in 25 states.

Previously, MercyOne had been operating under a joint agreement with Trinity Health and CommonSpirit Health until the two parties signed an agreement in April 2022 for Trinity to acquire all facilities and assets of the Iowa-based MercyOne.
