Meredith Is Confronted by a Familiar Face in New ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 18 Trailer

This brand-new Grey’s Anatomy trailer is leaving us with more questions than answers.

This week, ABC released a full-length teaser for the season 18 premiere, which will double as a Station 19 crossover event. Despite the cryptic montage, the clip confirms that someone from Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) past is returning to the show. And we already have a few ideas about who it may be.

The trailer features a montage of scenes from both Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy. At the end of the clip, the narrator says, “The biggest cliffhangers from last season will be answered…and someone from Meredith’s past comes back.”

This might not come as a huge surprise to fans, especially since ABC previously revealed that Meredith’s late mom, Dr. Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), is set to reprise her role. Not to mention, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) is also returning for multiple episodes.

While the trailer could be referring to Burton and/or Walsh, we can’t help but wonder if the network has something—or someone—else up its sleeve. For example, why would they tell us about their return if they planned on surprising us? Plus, Burton is featured in the beginning of the teaser, so we highly doubt she’s the mystery returnee. Walsh, on the other hand, might be the culprit (key word: might), but only time will tell.

If you need us, we’ll be crossing our fingers for a much-needed Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) cameo. Grey’s Anatomy season 18 will premiere on Thursday, September 30, on ABC.
