MERRILL - Firefighters rescued a woman from a second-floor window during a fire that broke out in the 200 block of East Second Street early Tuesday.

At 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a caller reported the fire at 213½ E. Second St., Merrill, according to the Merrill Fire Department. Dispatchers told firefighters that someone was trapped on the second floor, and they found a woman at an upstairs window.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the woman and then battled the fire, which had spread to an apartment building next door, according to the Fire Department. The fire caused significant damage to both buildings before firefighters were able to contain it.

The buildings are near Salvo's Pizza and Young's Drug Store.

No people were hurt in the fire, but a dog died, according to the Fire Department.

The Corning, Pine River and Wausau fire departments all responded. Fire investigators determined the blaze likely started in the upper stairwell of the apartment building and was unintentional. The official cause of the fire remains undetermined.
