Meryl Streep Gets a New York Subway Stop for Her 72nd Birthday

Over the years, we're sure Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep has received some unusual gifts. But, this may be her first New York City subway stop. In honor of Streep's 72nd birthday on June 22, two artists changed the 72nd street subway sign to read "72nd Streep."
New York City-based artist Adrian Wilson (@plannedalism) and Matt Duncan (@graycement) added a "p" to a few signs in the Upper West Side's 72nd street station. Wilson also posted a photo of an altered street sign reading "72nd Streep," but later shared that, while the subway images are real, the street sign image was Photoshopped.
Wilson told Time Out that this artwork was the perfect way to honor Streep's birthday. "I am known for my subway sign tributes and realized back in January that this one letter sticker change would be the perfect birthday surprise from New York to one of its best-loved stars," he said. "Hopefully she enjoys the surprise and the MTA let it stay up for the day."
"'Subway Becomes Her' Happy 72nd birthday Meryl from @plannedalism and @graycement," Wilson posted on his Instagram account, with a play on Streep's 1992 movie, Death Becomes Her.
Wilson is known for manipulating subway signs in his artwork. He was responsible for transforming the 50th Street station to read "Ruth Street" when Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away last September. The sign change quickly went viral.
Even though these installations are not legal, Wilson does not appear concerned. When discussing the Ruth Street work, he told Gothamist, "Technically this is illegal but if I am charged for it, in this particular case I believe the Supreme Court will dismiss my case!"
