The Mesilla Valley Christian boys golf team won its first boys golf team state championship since 2005 with junior Logan Morris winning the school's first individual state title.

The SonBlazers shot a two-day total of 656 to win the team title with Morris shooting a total of 155 at Canyon Club at Four Hills in Albuquerque with younger brother and teammate Riley Morris finishing second, two shots back.

"It was exciting to watch," said MVCS coach Chad Morris, who is the father of Riley and Logan. "They have both been playing for five or six years. They have been working really hard for it so it's nice to see the work finally pay off."

The SonBlazers led Clovis Christian by 17 strokes entering the second round and Logan Morris was only two shots back of the leader.

"The second day, all four of our players who counted toward the score started off on fire," Morris said. "They came relaxed and ready to play. As the day progressed, we knew six or seven holes that we had done enough to lock it up but we kept doing our job."

Beau Barker tied for ninth overall, Ayden Muro and Sam Biad helped the SonBlazers secure the team title, while the individual lead changed hands several times during the final nine holes before Logan Morris was able to edge his brother.
