Mess from train derailment in Big Beaver left behind 1 year later
A year later, all of the mess from a train that went off the tracks in Big Beaver near the Shenango Road bridge in Feb. 2022 is still left behind.
“It is Norfolk Southern’s job to clean it up,” said Amy Market. Norfolk Southern owns the property where the scraps, tanks and derailed cars are left behind.

Market reached out to Channel 11, she wants to know why this has never been cleaned up.
“I think it would have gotten cleaned up had it been a little bit bigger, the East Palestine stuff got cleaned up because it was so big,” Market said. “This didn’t get cleaned up because we are a small town and it happened where it happened. It makes our little town in big beaver look trashy.”

The derailment in Big Beaver is less than 10 miles from the derailment in East Palestine.
Norfolk Southern officials told Channel 11 they are aware of the mess in Big Beaver. They say it was supposed to be cleaned up this month, but their crew is working in East Palestine right now. They know it’s an eyesore and have it on their list to get picked up soon.
The company said when trains derail, they are sometimes carrying goods for customers. Those customers then work with us to determine whether the goods are salvageable or need scrapped. That can take a significant amount of time, delaying the removal.
Market hopes this is taken care of sooner, rather than later.
“We love Big Beaver, we love our community, we want it cleaned up,” she said.
