A 'messy' winter storm bringing snow and flooding may cause travel delays across Northeast

Expect travel delays, heavy rain and possible flooding in the Northeast over the weekend as a slow-moving storm moves eastward from the Midwest.

Rainfall up to 2 inches was expected Saturday for the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England, with possible flooding in portions of northern Virginia and central Maryland, according to the National Weather Service.

Flood advisories were also in effect for parts of New Hampshire, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. The NWS office in Portland, Maine, issued a flood watch through Saturday night for the "messy winter storm," the office said on Twitter.

Snow and freezing rain could be problematic in the Appalachians, NWS said, with snow accumulations up to 1 inch and a glaze of ice. The icy conditions disabled several tractor-trailers in Pennsylvania, causing a closure on Route 322 westbound, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

Wintry weather conditions were expected to hit the Poconos and Catskills first Saturday morning, followed by the Adirondacks and northern New England in the afternoon.

In the Midwest, several inches of snow were expected Saturday in parts of the western Great Lakes, tapering off by Saturday evening.

The storm was expected to lift in the northeast by Sunday, with continued snow across the Great Lakes and central Appalachians, NWS said.
