How I Met Your Father boss responds to the show's Lizzie McGuire crossover

How I Met Your Father has treated lead star Hilary Duff fans to an unexpected Lizzie McGuire crossover.
The latest episode of the How I Met Your Mother spin-off, titled 'A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Valentine's Day', saw Duff's Sophie and the rest of the gang reminisce on their worst Valentine's Days to cheer up Ellen (Tien Tran).
The flashbacks were all newly created for the show, except for Sophie's teen segment, which cut directly to a clip from Duff's beloved teen show Lizzie McGuire.

Originally slated to return on Disney+, the revived Lizzie McGuire was set to follow the adventures of a 30-something Lizzie living in New York City. The series was ultimately shelved, with Duff being very vocal about her disappointment.
This could be why the actress was very much on board with using a clip from the early-noughties show for How I Met Your Father.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Hulu series co-creator Elizabeth Berger explained how the crossover came to be, revealing it had been an idea from episode writer Amy-Jo Perry.

"And then we very quickly got a temperature check from Hilary via text, asking, 'How do you feel about this?' And she was immediately game," Berger said.
"Hilary thinks it’s funny. She did not hesitate for one second. Then it was a matter of combing through episodes and being, like, 'What's a great, dramatic, angsty middle school moment?'"
The final pick was a sequence from the season 2 Valentine's Day episode 'First Kiss,' in which Lizzie experiences a series of first moments, from her first love to her first heartbreak.
How I Met Your Father is available on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK, with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
