How I Met Your Father series premiere spoilers follow.

How I Met Your Father has finally made its debut, and with it came a big surprise in the form of an unexpected cameo.

The How I Met Your Mother sequel series focuses the action on Sophie (played in the future by Kim Cattrall and Hilary Duff in her younger incarnation) as she relays the story to her son of how she met his father.

In the past (or, more specifically, the present day), Sophie meets Jesse (Christopher Lowell), who has gone viral after his proposal to ex-girlfriend Meredith went awry.

As we see, Meredith is played by none other than Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester – aka Blair Waldorf. And it's been confirmed that the star will be recurring in the first season, so expect to see a lot more of her (via TVLine).

Ahead of the show's premiere, executive producer Isaac Aptaker confirmed that the series is set in the same universe as How I Met Your Mother, though clarified that it is "not a reboot".

"People keep referring to the show as a 'reboot', and it's not a reboot," he told TVLine. "It's set in the world of the previous show, but it's really its own thing. That said, we love How I Met Your Mother."

In Digital Spy's review of the new series, we wrote: "How I Met Your Father does a good job of nodding to its source material without outright copying it, but ultimately it feels like the apartment formerly owned by Marshall and Lily – it's the same thing, but given a quick lick of paint.

"Let's hope the show maintains its upwards trajectory, or it'll be too little too late."

How I Met Your Father airs Tuesdays on Hulu in the US, and is streaming on Disney+ in the UK with new episodes every Wednesday.
