The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy snow this weekend
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as heavy snow and blizzards are expected to hit Scotland and northern England this weekend.
The warning for snow and ice has been issued from midday on Saturday to 10am on Sunday, with a "risk of freezing rain in places". The forecaster is alerting those in the affected regions to travel delays on roads, which may strand some vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

The heaviest snow is expected on higher ground, where up to 40cm could be possible on the highest peaks. Lighter snowfall has been forecast for lower levels, with accumulation of 0-5cm expected.
After some mild weather in the west earlier this week, it turned chillier on Thursday morning, when temperatures dropped to below freezing in many parts of the U.K. With temperatures hovering around 2C for many on Friday, it's definitely time to dig out the hats and gloves. As for the outlook for Christmas? The weather looks mixed.
"Heading into the Christmas week, it will probably stay unsettled, with further spells of wind and rain, but interspersed by some brighter and showery weather," the Met Office states in its long-range forecast. "Temperatures on the whole look likely to be a little milder than average. However, there is a small chance of colder temperatures, which could bring snow to hilltops in the north, and perhaps to low levels for a time in the northeast."
So, we shouldn't count on it being a white Christmas at this stage.
