David Carrick, the former Metropolitan police officer and serial rapist, is being investigated for a sexual assault dating from when he was 13, it has emerged.

Carrick, 48, was jailed for life with a minimum of 30 years behind bars after pleading guilty to a string of “violent and brutal” attacks on a dozen women over more than two decades as a serving officer.

Detectives are now investigating another alleged assault from when he was a young teenager, The Sunday Times Magazine reports, potentially extending the timeline of his offending back to his childhood.

Born in Salisbury and brought up in Wiltshire, Carrick was a “normal” and “popular” boy growing up according to his family and friends.

“I just don’t know why he has done it. He should have been caught a long time ago. I know he has let himself down, but the Met didn’t support him very well,” his mother, Jean, told The Sunday Times.

“They gave him a gun and put him in that position. Why would they do that? Now he has lost everything,” the 67-year-old, who has not seen her son in 10 years, added.

‘Everybody loved him’

One of Carrick’s former classmates, who knew him for two decades, said he was “definitely popular” as a young boy.

“He had plenty of girlfriends. He was a lovely lad at school. I can’t say he wasn’t, because he was. Everybody loved him,” they told the publication.

He also developed a passion for martial arts and enjoyed skateboarding, and took part in his school’s French exchange programme.

Carrick experienced domestic abuse as a child, with his stepfather, Alex Man-Clarke, regularly beating his mother.

During his trial earlier this year, the court heard how he told a probation officer about his “childhood trauma”, and how his parents used to “drink to excess” and “neglected” him.

But his mother claims that while she drank to cope with the abuse from Man-Clarke, she never saw that abuse extend to her son.

Carrick left home at the age of 16, moving to Amesbury in Wiltshire, before joining the army in 1996.

He passed vetting and was accepted into the Met in 2001, despite having two crime reports on the system after being investigated for burglary and theft against an ex-girlfriend, and for malicious phone calls to her.

A third crime report was registered on the system under Carrick’s name during his probation, after he was accused of harassment and actual bodily harm following an attack on a girlfriend.

Carrick committed dozens of depraved attacks on at least 13 women in Hertfordshire and London between 2003 and 2020, despite being employed as an armed officer responsible for protecting Parliament and government offices.

He was nicknamed “B------ Dave” by his colleagues, reportedly for his cruel and mean behaviour.

Up to five more women have come forward since he was sentenced in February, with Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire Police’s major crime units all continuing to receive calls from new victims.
