Meta Crystal Shop brings new energy to Mellwood Art Center

Crystals first caught Megan Toomey’s eye unexpectedly a few years ago while she was co-running a coffee shop in Owensboro that also sold local artists’ wares.

One vendor’s colorful crystals intrigued her, and coupled with her interest in self-development, she started researching them and their uses, which many believe have healing powers.

“I think we’re all here to learn and grow, and I feel like crystals are a good tool for that,” she said.

Toomey left the coffee shop in March 2020 with the intention of opening a store focused on the metaphysical, a branch of philosophy that studies the fundamental nature of reality. Then COVID hit, delaying but not derailing her plans to open, which she did by year’s end.

A move to Louisville earlier this year led Toomey to close the doors on the original Meta Crystal Shop and open anew in August in the Mellwood Art Center, 1860 Mellwood Ave.

“I want to offer products that inspire and support you no matter your divine path,” she said. “It can be your spiritual path or your healing path. We’re all on a journey and I think that the more support and inspiration you have, the better.”

Some believe crystals give off various energies and have restorative or healing properties, Toomey said, while others simply admire them for their beauty.

She said crystals are “a good representation of your intention,” be it a desire for strength or confidence as one navigates their day.

“You could also have your grandmother’s plastic trinket in your pocket,” she said. “Your own thoughts and intentions are possibly the most powerful thing on the planet.”

Her shop offers crystals at various price points. Some are standalone pieces while others are wearable jewelry. Many are small enough to carry around with you, while some are larger display pieces.

Toomey also sells herbs, books, home décor and plants, and she hopes to add more inventory and offer “self-development groups” as she finds her footing in Louisville.

“You don’t have to use them spiritually,” she said. “You don’t have to think they’re super special. But I kinda do.”

Meta Crystal Shop, in suite 186 at Mellwood Art Center, is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
