Jeff Metcalfe, who retired from the Arizona Republic sports staff in October after a 36-year run, has been named Arizona Sports Writer of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.

This is the first time Metcalfe has been honored by the NSMA, which has named a sports writer and sportscaster of the year in each state, along with national awards, since the late 1950s.

Al McCoy, the radio voice of the Phoenix Suns, was selected as the Arizona Sportscaster of the Year. It's the 12th such honor for McCoy, and his first selection since 1979.

Metcalfe was a mainstay covering Arizona State and the Olympics for the Republic, and a champion of women’s sports coverage. His last year saw him cover the Tokyo Summer Games, the 15th Olympics assignment of his career, as well as the Phoenix Mercury's run to the WNBA Finals.

Kent Somers and Nick Piecoro are current Republic sports writers who also have received this award from NSMA.
