Metra to break ground on long-planned Peterson Ridge station in Edgewater

Metra is set to begin construction on a new Peterson Ridge Station in Edgewater after a decade of planning.
The station on the Union Pacific North line was originally going to include funding from a 2009 state bond program but was delayed by state budget problems. More recently, the project needed engineering work and ran into delays getting city permits, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.
Preliminary work has now begun, and Metra is planning to formally break ground on the project Nov. 1.
Metra is funding the project with a $15 million grant from the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and $7 million in federal funding.
The station will be built along the Metra tracks west of the intersection of North Ridge and West Peterson avenues. Work will include building two six-car platforms, a new pedestrian bridge over Peterson and two shelters with on-demand heating.
The station is set to include five ADA-compliant parking spaces and 44 paid parking spaces along Ravenswood Avenue, as well as bicycle parking. An access drive will have a cul-de-sac turnaround and ADA-compliant pickup and drop-off. Traffic signals near the station entrance will be reworked.
Two existing bridges at Peterson and Ridge avenues are set to be rehabilitated.
Metra awarded a contract for the work in July 2020, and at the time said work was slated to begin in the fall of that year and would take about 18 months to complete.
