Metro Atlanta high school placed on lockdown after officials use pepper spray to break up a fight

An incident involving pepper spray led to a metro Atlanta high school having a short lockdown this past week, according to school officials.

On Wednesday, Lithonia High School was placed on a brief lockdown after a fightt involving several students, according to Vice Principal Tashina G. White.

“At Lithonia High School, we prioritize safety as a critical aspect of our school and district, and we work diligently to maintain orderly and conducive learning environments for our students and staff,” White wrote in an email to parents and guardians. “DCSD Police Officers, campus security, and school staff quickly responded to separate the individuals, but the altercation intensified, requiring the use of OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) spray to regain control. Following District protocols, the school was placed on a short lockdown to ensure containment of the incident.”

Medical officials treated students for injuries, but none of the injuries were serious, according to White.

It is unclear if any students have been disciplined for their actions in the incident.

White said the school has a strict policy against fighting.

“Situations like these negatively impact our schools’ safety, instruction, and confidence. We ask that our families and community partners help us address these disciplinary issues and the consequences of these behaviors by talking to your children or other young people you know,” White said.
