Metro Atlanta mom of 3 says property manager has left them with no A/C for months in sweltering heat

Two months of sweating is what Nafetera Johnson- Mangham says she and her three children have been dealing with.

“The air is on but it’s hot,” she said.

Mangham showed Investigative Reporter Ashli Lincoln, her dining room where she now sleeps on a mattress to cool off from the heat.

“Nothing is repaired, nothing is done, nothing is completed, it’s just a nightmare,” she said.

Mangham says the problem started in May. She sent Channel 2 several pictures in June showing her climbing thermostat.

Lincoln asked Mangham what’s the hottest her thermostat registered, and she responded, “86 degrees.”

Mangham says she rents the home as a part of a least to own program through the owner Home Partners of America.

However, we learned a subsidiary of Home Partners of America called Pathlight Property Management is responsible for maintenance request.

“I want to sleep in my car at night it’s so hot in here,” she said.

Before reaching out to Channel 2, Mangham says a repair man did stop by at the beginning of June. He indicated the issue was with the thermostat. But since that acknowledgement, Mangham no permanent fix has been made.

A spokesperson for Home Partners of America told Channel 2 they are investigating why repairs have been delayed.

In a statement they said; There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of the people who live in our homes. Our resident service teams and vendor partners are working around the clock to address the impact of an historic heat wave that is currently affecting a large portion of the southern US. In this case, we will continue working to complete repairs to this home’s HVAC system as soon as possible and have installed temporary cooling units in the home at our expense to keep the home comfortable in the meantime.

A spokesperson also noted that the resident’s phone number changed and they didn’t have the new number. They said their team and vendors could not get in touch with the resident until they were able to get her new number via the county inspector. Home Partners of America says their vendors are reporting massive backlogs due to heatwave. They’re hoping to fix Mangham’s AC within a few days. Temporary cooling units have been placed in the home.

DeKalb County Code Compliance issued the company a citation for the broken AC and other issues associated with the electricity.
