Metro-east coffee shop closes after 3 years, but another is on its way. What to know

Around the Corner Coffee Company, located at 1103 Mill St. in Maeystown is closed.

I have to admit this closing makes me sad.

I feel a little sad anytime a good coffee shop closes, really.

This one stands out because the opening of this coffee shop was one of my first business stories and first-ever in-person interview for the BND when I started reporting in 2020.

Around the Corner opened July 28, 2020, under the ownership of Matt Schweizer, who is also a co-owner and brewer at Hopskeller Brewing Company in Waterloo.

Schweitzer opened Around the Corner after taking over the shop, previously known as the Village Kaffeehaus, when Arnie Juelfs retired after 13 years.

With Around the Corner Coffee, Schweitzer turned his longtime interest in coffee into a good business in the small village.

The closing was announced on the shop’s Facebook page in early August.

“It’s with a mix of sadness and joy that we wanted to let everyone know that we’re selling the coffee shop,” stated the Aug. 11 post. “The space will still be a coffee shop (more on that later), and we couldn’t be happier with the future owners!”

Around the Corner Coffee Company’s last day was Sunday, Aug. 20.

Now, the space taken up by Around the Corner Coffee Company will not sit empty.

You may have noticed the “more on that later” in the quoted social media post.

Well, here is the “more.”

A new coffee shop, The Roastery, will soon open at 1103 Mill St. under the ownership of Paige Hewett and Caleb Wolz.

Hewett is the founder/owner and Chief Oat Milk Officer of Waterloo-based Living Millennially: The Roastery & The Pop Up.

Wolz is the Roaster and Jack of All Trades at Living Millennially, according to the website.

The Roastery will be the brick and mortar coffee chop that complements The Pop Up, the mobile latte bar.

The coffee is sourced from small-scale, ethical farmers, states the website, and roasted in-house.

The specialty is oak milk lattes.

And if you haven’t had oat milk, you’re missing out. It’s so good!

The Pop Up can usually be found on Saturdays at the Monroe County Farmers Market in Waterloo. It will be at the Tower Grove Pride event Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23-24.
