Metro-east middle school placed on lockdown after unloaded gun found. Juvenile in custody

Administrators found an unloaded gun Friday afternoon at Mason-Clark Middle School in East St. Louis, prompting them to institute a school lockdown.

One student, a juvenile, was taken into custody, said Police Chief Kendall Perry. He said the investigation is ongoing.

Sydney Stigge-Kaufman, executive director of communications and strategic partnerships for East St. Louis School District 189, said no one was injured.

“The school was placed in lockdown as law enforcement quickly arrived to do a more thorough check of the building and assist with student dismissal,” according to the statement released by Stigge -Kaufman.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the students, our staff, families , as well as law enforcement as we continue to focus on safety,” the statement said.
