METRO ROUNDUP: Rose-Hulman baseball splits again

May 5—Rose-Hulman's baseball team (19-19 overall, 11-9 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) split a second straight road doubleheader Friday.

The Engineers dropped the first game 6-5 to Bluffton before rebounding for an 8-5 victory.

After Bluffton opened the first game with an RBI single, the Engineers answered quickly in the second with a two-run double from Kade Kline.

After the Beavers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, Rose answered with an RBI single from Dalton Busboom and a two-run homer from freshman Caleb Frakes, his second.

O'Connell led the team on the day with three hits in four at-bats. Andy Krajecki added two hits. Schuyler Wilcox and Zacheus Carr combined to shut down the Beavers in the final four innings, allowing two hits.

In the second game, the Engineers took control with a five-run third inning thanks to a couple of Bluffton miscues. Peter Rogers, Mason Rasmussen and Frakes all recorded RBI in the frame.

Bluffton answered with a five-run inning in the fifth to tie the game.

With neither team being able to score again until the eighth inning, Busboom had a homer over the left-field wall to put Rose-Hulman back in front. The Engineers added two more runs on Ben Christiansen's sacrifice fly and a Bluffton wild pitch to extend the lead.

Rose will return to Art Nehf Field on Sunday to host the Manchester Spartans at noon and 3 p.m. for Senior Day.

College softball

* Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 4, Rio Grande 3 — Jasmine Kinzer delivered a pinch-hit RBI single through the middle of the infield and Abbi Henderson raced home to give Saint Mary-of-the-Woods a 4-3 walk-off victory against Rio Grande in the River States Conference championships.

Summer Rocha was excellent in relief of Lanna Martinez to earn her third win of the tournament and help put the Pomeroys into Saturday's championship game. SMWC awaits the winner of IU Southeast and Rio Grande on Saturday morning.

The Pomeroys (34-14) and Red Storm were in a scoreless tie, until Rio Grande plated a run in the top of the fourth. The Pomeroys answered right back when Jaleigh Crawford tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Lyric Krause.

Rylee Pender put the Pomeroys ahead 2-1 in the fifth with a two-strike squeeze bunt to score Jaselyn Conn. Rio Grande tied it in the top of the sixth 2-2.

The Pomeroys played some more small ball in the bottom of the inning. Camryn Scott led off with a single through the infield. Justyce Rohrabaugh put down a sacrifice bunt, and Scott, who was stealing with the pitch, reached third. Jaleigh Crawford fell behind in the count but battled to get a fly ball into the air for the go-ahead sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, Rocha got the first two batters, but Kylie Sedgwick's line drive got past a diving Tori Lee in center field for a triple. She came in to score on a pop-up by Brisker.

With two outs, Mikayla Mills kept the inning alive in the bottom of the seventh for SMWC. Henderson pinch ran and reached second on a single by Pender, setting up Kinser's heroics.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team drops both games of their final doubleheader to #23 Transylvania with a 5-2 loss in game one and a 6-0 loss in game two.

The Pioneers got their bats going early with two runs in the first and three runs in the second for a quick 5-0 lead.

The Fightin' Engineers got one back in the third to get on the board thanks to a sacrifice fly from Nicole Lang.

Ashley Pinkham then singled home another run for their second run of the game, but they would fall 5-2.

Phoebe Worstell pitched very well in the final four innings, allowing no runs on just one hit and three walks.

In the second game, Rose-Hulman struggled to get their bats going once again with just four hits from MaKenzie Morgan, Lexi Fortuna, Pinkham, and Worstell.

The Fightin' Engineers would fall in the second game 6-0.

Rose-Hulman finishes the season 7-24. We wish the best to our four seniors Lexi Fortuna, Nicole Lang, MaKenzie Morgan, and Ashley Pinkham.

Men's golf

* Rose-Hulman sits in second-place — After Day 1 of the HCAC Championships at Belterra Resort in Florence, Ind., the Engineers shot a 303 as a team as they trail Transylvania by one stroke entering Day 2.

Owen King led the Engineers was one-over 72 for second place in the tournament. King recorded four birdies on the back nine to shot a 3-under 33 coming into the clubhouse.

Thomas Butler rebounded from a triple bogey on the opening hole to shoot a four-over 75. Butler enters day two tied for sixth place.

Round 2 will take place at 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

Season-best performances, distance crew top-10 marks headline final regular season meet

Results

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Frankie Young III, Dominique Wood, Ethan Breen and Brett Norton picked up event wins Friday, leading the way Indiana State in a strong performance for the Sycamores at the Billy Hayes Invitational.

Young III had a season-best mark of 7.36m (24-01.75) in the long jump, while Breen ran a career-best 3:46.59 in the 1500m. Breen used a strong final 250m to climb four spots in the last half-lap and was one of three Sycamores to run a sub-3:50 time in the event, marking the first time in program history that Indiana State had three athletes run sub-3:50 in the 1500m in the same race. Norton had to wait until the final event of the day, but came out on top in the shot put with a mark of 17.86m (58-07.25). Wood had a season-best triple jump mark of 11.76m (38-07.00).

Also among the notables for the Blue and White were William Staggs, who set a PR in the outdoor pole vault for a fifth straight meet, and Ryann Porter, who had a strong showing in both the 100m hurdles and long jump. Niesha Anderson had a season-best mark in the shot put while also throwing a USATF U20 Championship standard mark in the hammer throw.

Sprints/Hurdles

Friday was a fairly light day for the sprints group, though both the men's and women's hurdlers had strong performances. Ryann Porter (14.16) earned a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles, while Eva Grace Quinlan had a career-best mark of 14.87 to finish fourth. Collin Forrest ran a season-best 14.68 in the 110m hurdles final, while Daryl Black clocked a season-best time of 14.55 in the prelims.

Nyla Jones and Michelle McDonald picked up top-three finishes in the 100m for the Trees, with Jones coming second at 11.79 and McDonald placing third at 12.07. Jhivon Wilson was the lone men's entrant in the 100m, finishing sixth with a time of 10.84. Isiah Thomas also earned a sixth-place finish in the 200m with a time of 22.07.

Indiana State's lone relay team of the day, the women's 4x100m consisting of Jones, McDonald, Kamille Gaskin-Griffith and Iyanla Hunter, ran a time of 46.45 to place third.

Distance

The fast heat of the men's 1500m was a big one for the Sycamores, with Ethan Breen (3:46.59), Jason Dworak (3:48.45) and Jackson Krieg (3:48.83) all running sub-3:50 times. It was the first time in program history that Indiana State had three sub-3:50 1500m times in one race, while Breen and Krieg moved up to sixth and 10th in program history, respectively. Breen also won the heat after a strong push on the back half of the final lap. Emerson Fayman ran a season-best 3:56.60 in the normal heat, while Kyra Young clocked the top time for the Trees in the women's 1500m at 4:53.68.

Indiana State also got top-three finishes in the 800m from Napoleon Hernandez (1:52.39) on the men's side and Maria Biskopstoe (2:13.72) on the women's side. Wyatt Wyman placed 11th in the fast section of the event at 1:50.67.

Jumps

Indiana State had a strong day in the jumps events, picking up top-three finishes in nearly every event contested. Included in that were season-best performances from Frankie Young III (7.36m/24-01.25) in the long jump and Dominique Wood (11.76m/38-07.00) in the triple jump to earn first-place finishes. Ryann Porter had a career-best mark of 5.92m (19-05.25) in the long jump to earn another podium finish, one of two for her on the day.

The Sycamores also had a pair of top-three finishes in the men's high jump, as Trevor Thompson and Kevin Krutsch both cleared 2.08m (6-09.75) to finish second and third, respectively. Kelsey Bowlds cleared 1.60m (5-03.00) for the Trees in the women's high jump.

William Staggs continued his impressive season in the pole vault, notching a personal-best mark for a fifth consecutive week. Staggs cleared 5.29m (17-04.25) to place third at the meet, with his mark ranking second in program history). On the women's side, Selene Weaver and Brooklyn Giertz both cleared 3.93m (12-10.74) to place in the top 10.

Throws

Brett Norton continued his strong campaign for the Blue and White, winning the shot put title with an outdoor career-best mark of 17.86m (58-07.25) to move to eighth in program history in the event. Norton wasn't the only Sycamore thrower with a banner day, as Niesha Anderson had strong showings on the women's side for the Trees in both the shot put (15.00m/49-02.50) and hammer throw (54.01m/177-02). Anderson's hammer throw mark will qualify her for the 2023 USATF U20 Championships.

Noah Bolt picked up a pair of top-three marks for the Blue and White Friday, finishing second in the hammer throw (59.93m/196-07) and third in the discus (54.50m/178-10), with his discus mark ranking sixth in program history. Hannah Redlin also had a third-place finish in the women's discus with a top mark of 47.70m (156-06).

Cloe Clark was the lone Sycamore javelin thrower Friday, finishing with a top throw of 32.16m (105-06).

Indiana State heads to Normal, Illinois, for the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 11-13.

* 15-year mark broken — At Bloomington, Rose-Hulman senior Katrina Agustin snapped a 15-year school record to highlight the team's performance at the Indiana University Billy Hayes Invitational.

Agustin set the women's 100-meter dash record with a time of 12.56 seconds. The previous record was 12.61 set in 2008.

Narindwa Semakula added an eighth-place finish in the women's 100 hurdles with a time of 14.79 to provide depth.

In men's action, Rose-Hulman compiled several top-eight performances.

Jailen Hobbs led the Engineers with finishes of second and third against primarily NCAA Division I competition. Hobbs placed second in the 200m with a time of 21.47 and third in the 100m with a mark of 10.51.

Other top 8 finishers included Tim Youndt, fourth in the triple jump (46 feet, 4 inches 3/4), Kyle Brownell was seventh in the high jump (6-5 1/2); Cole Patton was seventh in the 400m hurdles (55.93); and Antoine Cooper with eighth in the discus (153-1).
