Mets' Alonso sets one rookie record, ties team mark

Pete Alonso of the New York Mets smacked his 26th homer on Saturday to set a record for most homers by a National League rookie prior to the All-Star break.

Alonso hit a solo blast in the first inning off Chicago Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana to erase the mark of 25 set in 2017 by Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alonso went 2-for-4 in the Mets' 10-2 vicory.

Alonso's homer also matches the Mets' single-season record for a rookie. Darryl Strawberry hit 26 in 1983.

Alonso is two homers shy of Mark McGwire's major league mark for most homers by a rookie before July 1. McGwire achieved that in 1987 with the Oakland Athletics.
