NEW YORK – The Mets will have to wait another day for their biggest early test of the 2022 season.

The series opener between the Mets and San Francisco Giants was postponed on Monday due to rain at Citi Field. It will be made up on Tuesday in a single admission doubleheader starting at 3:10 p.m.

The nightcap will begin approximately 30-40 minutes after the conclusion of game one. This year, MLB has returned to the traditional nine-inning format in doubleheaders.

Mets' right-hander Tylor Megill was scheduled to make his third start of the season on Monday before the postponement. Megill (2-0) has struck out 11 batters in 10 1/3 scoreless innings this year.

The doubleheader starting pitching matchups feature Megill against Alex Cobb in Game 1, while Max Scherzer faces off against Logan Webb in Game 2.

Megill: Mets' Tylor Megill looks plenty worthy of rotation spot after second clean outing

Meanwhile, Chris Bassitt and Carlos Carrasco are on track to start the final two games against the defending NL West champions.

Both teams are armed with pitching talent – the Giants (7-2) and Mets (7-3) came into the week ranked first and third, respectively, in total ERA. That's lifted the Mets to consecutive series wins over the Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks.

"Our depth has been tested early," manager Buck Showalter said on Sunday. We’ve got two guys in the rotation we were expecting to be a part of our depth during the course of the season, but very quietly (David Peterson) and Tylor have really stepped up to take some of the ‘must’ off of guys like Scherzer and Carlos and Bassitt. But it bodes well for us down the road."

Pitching: Mets' starting pitchers have been tested, but so far they're passing in a big way

The rainout gives the Mets a chance to reset their bullpen after using four relievers on Sunday – Trevor Williams, Chasen Shreve, Drew Smith and Edwin Diaz – to cover the last 14 outs.
