This Mexican bakery in Clovis is moving. Here’s what 7-Eleven has to do with it

A little mom-and-pop Mexican bakery in Clovis is planning to move to a bigger home.

Panaderia Café Oaxaca, at Clovis and Barstow avenues, is known for its pan dulce — the colorful Mexican sweet breads — and other goodies.

The business offers vegan options, including vegan pan and horchata.

It plans to move to 2331 Villa Ave., in the same shopping center as the Regal UA Clovis theater, near Shaw Avenue.

The current space the 13-year-old business is in is small, but that’s not why it’s moving.

Its lease was updated saying it’s not allowed to sell hot drinks, so as not to compete with the 7-Eleven next door, said Rosi Garcia, daughter of the owners.

“We are planning to bring in a lot more drinks,” once the move is complete, said Garcia, who’s also behind the Instagram account that shares scrumptious images of cakes, donuts, cookies and more.

They want to bring in coffee, but also teas, such as cinnamon or lemon leaf tea — “typical drinks that you would see in Mexico City,” she said.

The business plans to add a regular dairy version of horchata and jamaica, the hibiscus-based drink.

The drinks would pair with their most popular items, including cuernitos (the pink horn-shaped bread), conchas (the traditional round ones), and the tres leches cake slices.

But it’s going to be a while before they open in the new spot, possibly several months.

They need to install a kitchen at the new place, the former Clovis Janitorial Supply. They’ve been planning to move to the location for about three years. Recently, their plans to move forward with the work were approved by the City of Clovis.

An announcement on Instagram over the weekend drew 154 excited comments.

“I’m so thankful for everybody that’s been following us,” Garcia said. “I treat every single one of them as family because that’s what they are to me. They helped us grow.”
