Let me start off by saying that food debates are real. They are emotional, irrational, and sometimes make us say things that we regret. Among these great food debates, a particular fruit always seems to creep its back way into the conversation.

Yes, I'm talking about pineapples. And if you hadn't guessed already, they're back folks, and they are ready to do even more damage. According to news.com.au, Australian fast-food chain Mad Mex is now stirring up controversy with the recent addition of pineapple to the menu. While customers can choose to opt out of this interesting offer, I would personally be insulted by the fact that somebody even asked me to begin with.

Mad Mex launched this debate sometime after National Burrito Day (April 4), after asking customers "what they’d like to add to a burrito." Any evidence of this public pineapple burrito forum has been pretty difficult to track down, so I'm curious as to when or where it took place. Regardless, here we are. The people have (allegedly) spoken, and now pineapples are being thrown onto burritos willy nilly.

As of yesterday, the offer had officially been posted on Facebook, with a perhaps reconciliatory attempt to allow customers to actually weigh in.

Mad Max's CEO Clovis Young has also spoken out, claiming that while "he was prepared for the public backlash" he still "wanted to help answer the question of whether pineapple should be a staple in Mexican food." So basically this is for the culture. Sure. Got it...

To be fair, the debate does seem pretty evenly split, and I guess some people really do love pineapple on savory food. According to Young, “Some of them live in secret, and they’ve been waiting a long time for this day to come.” W-O-W.

For now, this item is supposed to only be a limited edition add-on, likely lasting until World Pineapple Day (June 27). But according to Young, if "the public reaction was [favorable] to the tropical fruit, it could soon be a staple on the Mad Mex menu." So if you're currently living in the land down under, please go on Facebook and vote (with your conscience)! We're counting on you!
