Mexican Fiesta in Milwaukee books Los Bukis for 50th anniversary

Mexican Fiesta in Milwaukee has made big plans for its 50th anniversary, booking a rare performance from one of the most popular Mexican bands of all time.

Los Bukis — the Latin pop group with multiple Grammy nominations and gold-and above certifications across 16 albums from the 1970s to the ‘90s — will play a kick-off concert at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater Aug. 24. Mexican Fiesta will take place at Milwaukee World Festival's Maier Festival Park Aug. 25 to 27. The Los Bukis show was booked by Madison-based FPC Live, the Live Nation-backed promoter that is the preferred booking partner for the amphitheater, outside of Summerfest.

"Mexican Fiesta's 50th anniversary is a great opportunity to honor our community's strong tradition of hard work and commitment as well as its unique cultural heritage," Teresa C. Mercado, Mexican Fiesta Executive Director, said in a statement. "Having Los Bukis performing as our kick-off celebration emphasizes the historical momentum and represents the beginning of a remarkable collaboration between FPC Live, Mexican Fiesta and Milwaukee World Festival."

Led by Marco Antonio Solís and his band co-founder and cousin Joel Solís, and featuring five other longtime members, Los Bukis has played fewer than 20 concerts since reuniting in 2021 after a 25-year hiatus.

The shows they’ve played have been blockbusters, including the first sold-out concert at the new SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Performing just nine stadium gigs in 2021, Los Bukis still landed at No. 6 for Billboard’s list of biggest touring acts that year, grossing $49.7 million.

The band played a handful of shows in 2022, promoted as the final concerts of their reunion tour, but plans evidently changed. Besides this Mexican Fiesta appearance, taking place during a gap in Antonio Solís’ 2023 solo arena tour, the only other Los Bukis show confirmed for 2023 is a headlining appearance at the Bésame Mucho festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Dec. 2.

"We believe this concert will be the largest performance for a Latin artist ever in the city of Milwaukee, and we anticipate hosting fans from all over at this momentous event," FPC Live co-president Charlie Goldstone said in a statement.

Tickets for Los Bukis' Mexican Fiesta concert go on sale to public at 10 a.m. Friday at the box office (200 N. Harbor Dr.) and ticketmaster.com, with presales beginning through Ticketmaster at 10 a.m. Thursday. Prices have yet to be announced, but tickets will include a free ticket to Mexican Fiesta on Aug. 25.
