This new Mexican ice cream shop is a hidden gem in South MS. Here’s everything we tried.

Hola, lectores.

Let’s cut to the chase. It’s hot out there right now, folks. I opened the door last night at 10 p.m. and was steamed with air that more closely resembled soup.

It’s so hot my weather app is giving me two simultaneous excessive heat warnings. I stepped into my back yard this morning and there was a sign over the bird nest on my porch that said “Gone north.”

If you put a plate of cookie dough on your dashboard before walking into work, they’ll be burned to a crisp when you get back. That’s just simple science.

But yesterday I stumbled into an oasis. And by stumbled I mean drove to with the precise address keyed into my maps app.

A unique, refreshing and definitely not a mirage ice cream parlor called Heladeria La Frescura on Highway 90 in Pascagoula. Just opened in mid-June, Heladeria La Frescura is a colorful Mexican ice cream shop with a wide variety of heat-escaping offerings.

Whether you’re in the mood for ice cream, crepes or a duro preparado plate, this place has you covered.

You can pop in for something more conventional, like a scoop of chocolate or strawberry ice cream. Or you can indulge in some other flavors you won’t find at Baskin-Robbins, like tequila, chongos or gansito.

A similar spread is available in popsicle form, with tastes ranging from bubble gum to pepino con chile.

You can also pair your treat with a snack, if you wish. The traditional menu features tostilocos, salchipulpos and elote revolcado. They also offer caramel-filled churros. I’ll type that again just in case you’re skimming: caramel-filled churros.

I started my afternoon reprieve from the Mississippi sun with a simple Mexican dessert, fresas con crema. It was a cup full of strawberries and filled with cream that was tan sabroso.

We also gave the swirlingly beautiful mangonada a try and I’d highly recommend for anyone hoping to give something with both a fresh taste and a complimentary kick a go. It’s made with mango ice cream, mangoes, tajin and chamoy.

The hidden treat here, though, is the lineup of aguas frescas. Free samples are encouraged and you definitely need to take advantage. They are technically “fresh waters” but can be thought of as juice with wide-ranging flavors and slight variations in thickness.

The options include strawberry, egg nog, pineapple and horchata. This is where I discovered my escape. This is where I defeated el sol. The tamarind aguas frescas was the most refreshing drink I have ever had. Don’t let the river water optics of this delicacy deter you.

If you’re reading this, Heladeri La Frescura, please know I am coming back with an empty gallon jug.

If you’re looking to beat the heat or simply try something new, pop in. Change your life. Vivir con alegría.
