A Mexican man died after he was found Aug. 8 unconscious and having seizures in a remote swath of rugged terrain about 15 miles northeast of the Raul H. Castro Port of Entry in Douglas.

Two Douglas Border Patrol agents with the horse patrol unit found the man at 8:57 p.m. after the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office advised them of the man’s approximate location, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The sheriff’s office had received a 911 call that a possible undocumented migrant was in distress.

The man was unconscious, breathing erratically and appeared to be having seizures. The agents placed the man on his side to keep his airway open. Agents requested ground emergency medical services because aviation assets were grounded because of inclement weather.

A Border Patrol agent emergency medical technician arrived at the location at 9:53 p.m. and helped move the man to meet EMS at mile marker 384 on State Highway 80. CPR and an automated external defibrillator were used on the man as they moved him to meet EMS.

The group met EMS, and the man was taken to the Copper Queen Community Hospital in Bisbee. CPR and AED were used on the man during the 30-minute drive to the hospital. Agents established hospital watch over the man, but he was pronounced dead by the emergency room attending physician at 11:49 p.m.

CBP disclosed the August death on Wednesday, more than two months after it happened.

Autopsy details performed Aug. 10 by the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner are pending. The incident is under review by CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the medical examiner’s office. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General was also notified.
