Mexican Navy Bids Farewell to Beloved Rescue Dog Frida

The Mexican Navy led tributes to Frida, a beloved search-and-rescue dog who became a symbol of Mexican resilience after an earthquake in 2017 that killed hundreds in Mexico City, after she died of natural causes on Tuesday, November 16.

“Thank you for serving Mexico, you will always live in our hearts,” the navy wrote on Twitter.

Frida, known for her boots and custom-made goggles – known as “doggles” – rescued 12 people and recovered the bodies of 43 others during her career, according to an official statement.

On October 6, a life-size statue of Frida was "unveiled" outside the navy’s head office in Mexico City. Frida was present during the ceremony what would be one of her last public appearances. Credit: SEMAR Mexico via Storyful
