Mexican police find 146 migrants hidden in freight truck

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Federal police in Mexico say they have found 146 Central American migrants packed aboard a freight truck in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

The Public Safety Department said Monday the migrants were traveling in overcrowded and unsafe conditions in the tractor-trailer.

One hundred and fifteen of the migrants were from Honduras, and the rest were from Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. They were placed in the custody of Mexico's immigration agency.

Since Mexico cracked down on migration to the U.S. border earlier this year, migrant traffickers have increasingly used commercial freight trucks to avoid detection.
