Mexicans pray to 'soccer' Baby Jesus for World Cup
STORY: Faithful soccer fans visited Mexico City’s San Miguel Arcangel church in the Tacuba neighbourhood, north of the city, to leave their best wishes to a figure of the Christ Child dressed in trainers, knee-high socks, and a national soccer team jersey.
The church’s sexton, Ernestina Volado, said people asked for a “miracle” to see their national team in the final or at least, reach the fifth game.
Fans visit the “soccer” Baby Jesus every World Cup since 1970 as the figure is considered the squat’s number 12.
Mexico kicks off its World Cup 2022 run with a match against Poland on Tuesday.
