Mar. 8—LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Josiah Allick sat up on the dais tucked away in the back of the Thomas and Mack Center late Wednesday night and shook his head.

After the UNM Lobos rolled with a second-half offensive explosion that carried them to an 87-76 win over the Wyoming Cowboys in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament, the 6-foot-8 power forward was invited to the postgame press conference after a game that seemed to be all about offense.

Sheepishly, Allick answered a question about how well he played against Cowboys star guard Hunter Maldonado — the sixth-year guard who scored 36 points and single-handedly willed the No. 11 seed Wyoming (9-22) to stay with the high-octane Lobos offense for most of the night.

"I mean, it's hard to kind of accept a compliment for defense when a guy scores 36, but I'll take it," said Allick."... Obviously, we had our battles (in three games this season), I tried to do my best, just make him have to work for it a little bit harder. I mean, he was making some really, really high-level plays and shots."

Allick's defense against Maldonado, who ended with 186 career points scored just against the Lobos in his college career, was just enough for the UNM (22-10) thanks to another elite-level offensive showing from the Lobos 1-2 backcourt punch of Jamal Mashburn, Jr., and Jaelen House. For the eighth time in their careers, each scored 20 or more points in the same game, tying a UNM record for a duo.

Mashburn, the league's leading scorer, was his usual steady self — 20 points, six rebounds, three assists.

House, who was injured and did not play in UNM's 70-56 Feb. 14 loss in the Pit to the Cowboys, scored 20 of his team-high 28 points in the second half and added seven rebounds, six assists, three steals, just one turnover and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line.

"Jaelen House is different," Wyoming assistant coach Sundance Wicks said after the game. "He wasn't down there when we played in the Pit. ... That dude can change games."

Wyoming, who split with the Lobos in the regular season, used its size advantage at every position on the court to slow the Lobos early — leading 38-35 at the half, and a high-arcing Xavier DuSell 3-pointer with 17:37 left in the game gave the upset-minded Cowboys their largest lead at 44-40.

The Lobos then started to get out in transition and changed the game with House and Mashburn leading the charge and out-running the Pokes.

UNM used a 12-3 run to lead 52-47 with 13:45 left.

Later a 10-2 run put them up 62-51 with 10:25 left.

And by the time House drained a 3-pointer with 9:03 left, it was 67-53, Lobos. The Lobo-heavy crowd that once earned the respect of fans calling the arena Pit West during previous league tournaments were buzzing like old times.

UNM's transition game started with rebounding and defensive stops allowing them to run.

"Play better defense," Richard Pitino said when asked what changed that allowed the Lobos to get out and run the fast break more in that stretch. "That's really it. It's hard to get out on the break when we don't defend, and we were defending. And we were rebounding."

UNM out-rebounded Wyoming 40-35, shot 57.6% in the second half and scored a blistering 1.444 points per possession in the second half, during which they outscored the Cowboys 52-38.

UP NEXT: The Lobos now face No. 3 seed Utah State in Thursday's quarterfinals at 9:30 p.m. UNM lost its only meeting with the Aggies this season — 84-73 — on Feb. 1 in Logan, Utah.

LINDER: Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder was not at Wednesday's game, instead back in Colorado with his ailing father.

"He's exactly where he needs to be," Maldonado said after the game of his coach.

Said Pitino, "Coach Linder is in our prayers. I was able to speak to him before the game and I know he is going through a lot right now, and I can only imagine what he is going through. He is a great person and a great family man. We're praying for him here in Lobo basketball."
