New Mexico State basketball: Aggies men get road win, women lose by one at UNM

The New Mexico State men's basketball team picked up a road win and the Aggies women lost a close game at rival New Mexico on Sunday.

Aggies guard Deshawndre Washington led the Aggies men to a 73-60 win at Duquesne to help the Aggies improve to 5-3. NM State will travel back across the country to California to end their three-game road trip on Wednesday at St. Mary's.

Washington scored 12 points in the first half to lead the Aggies to a 35-27 halftime lead. He finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Aggies shot 47 percent in the first half and Duquesne was just 35 percent and 1 for 11 from 3-point range. Duquesne was 8 for 12 at the foul line in the first half to stay within striking distance.

The Aggies' lead great to 51-34 on a DaJuan Gordon (10 points, 11 rebounds) tip in, where he was fouled and converted the three point play.

Duquesne closed to within 10 points in the second half, but the Aggies pushed it back out to 15 points when Xavier Pinson (11 points, six assists) split a trap and found Issa Muhammad for a lob for a 58-43 lead with 6:34 left to play.

Muhammad was 7 for 7 from the field for 17 points and six rebounds before fouling out.

Muhammad and Marcelus Avery returned to the lineup for the Aggies on Sunday after serving a one-game suspension at Santa Clara.

UNM women edge Aggies, 65-54

The Aggies nearly swept the rival Lobos on the season, but fell to 3-6 on the season.

The NM State women trailed 40-31 at halftime in Albuquerque.

Aggies guard Molly Kaiser pulled the Aggies even at 64-64 with a four-point possession with 17 seconds left to play.

UNM hit a free throw to get the win.

The Aggies host UTEP on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Aggies won the first meeting between the teams with a 73-64 overtime victory at the Pan American Center on Nov. 15.

Sunday was the first time the rival schools met in an athletic competition since the men's series was cancelled following the Nov. 19 shooting in Albuquerque that involved men's player Mike Peake.
