New Mexico State women fall to Cal Baptist in WAC home game

LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State women's basketball team has already qualified for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament next month in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Aggies missed a potential chance to move up the standings on Saturday, though, falling 73-65 to California Baptist at the Pan American Center.

The Aggies dropped to 8-7 in the WAC and earned a split with third-place Cal Baptist. Cal Baptist improved to 11-4 in WAC play.

The Aggies were 4 for 19 from 3-point range while Cal Baptist finished 10 for 25 from long range.

Cal Baptist took a 53-49 lead into the fourth quarter on a long Lesila Finau (22 points) 3-pointer from the top of the key in the final seconds of the third.

Finau hit a triple to push Cal Baptist's lead to 61-53 with 6:01 left to play.

NM State started 2 for 13 from 3-point range before back-to-back Tayelin Grays (15 points) triples from the top of the key in the fourth quarter.

Grays pulled the Aggies to within 61-59 with 3:14 to play, but it was the closest the Aggies would get.

The Aggies play host to Texas Arlington on Thursday at 6 p.m.
