Shakes comes to New Mexico following his collegiate career at Penn State. With the Nittany Lions, Shakes appeared in 73 matches and recorded a 1.09 goals against average on a .773 save percentage. He also recorded 21 shutouts (28% of his matches) and was an All-Big Ten selection.

“Kris is a terrific, young talent who has been truly impressive in our preseason, and is only going to continue to get better,” said United Sporting Director Itamar Keinan. “We’re fortunate to have such a terrific young player joining our team, and can’t wait to see what he’ll accomplish on and off the pitch.”

Shakes joins Alex Tambakis to round off the goalkeepers on New Mexico’s roster. Former UNM goalkeeper and Albuquerque native Ford Parker left United following the 2023 season and is now a member of USL League One’s Tormenta FC.

New Mexico United opens the season on Saturday, March 9.
