Meyers Leonard keeps pace with Stephen Curry, goes off for 25 1st-half points vs. Warriors
The Western Conference Finals between the Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors was billed as a matchup that could break out into a shootout at any moment.
Nobody saw it coming like this, though.
With their backs against the wall down 3-0 in the series, the Blazers caught fire in the first half of Monday’s Game 4 to take a 69-65 lead into halftime.
Stephen Curry pushed the pace for the Warriors with a 25-point half that included hitting 5-of-7 3-pointers.
Curry matched by ... Meyers Leonard?
A Blazers player matched him on the scoreboard, but it wasn’t Damian Lillard or CJ McCollum. It was little-used reserve forward Meyers Leonard, who hit 5-of-6 3-pointers and 10-of-12 free throws to give Portland the edge after two quarters with a career-high 25 points.
He finished with 30 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
Prior to Monday, Leonard averaged 5.5 points in 13 minutes per game in the playoffs. He got the start on Monday and made the most of it.
But it wasn’t enough as the Warriors rallied from a 17-point deficit behind 37 points from Curry to pull off the sweep with a 119-117 win in overtime.
