MHSAA Football: Getting to know the 2022 Niles Vikings

With just their fifth winning season in the last 36 years, the Niles Vikings thought they had did enough to qualify for last year's MHSAA football playoffs. Instead, they missed the playoff field by .111 playoff points. The top 32 teams in each division qualify for the postseason and the Vikings finished 33rd.

Head coach: Scot Shaw (2nd season)

Last year's record: 5-4 (missed out on MHSAA playoffs)

2022 schedule: Aug. 26 at Sturgis, Sep. 1 vs Buchanan, Sep. 9 at Edwardsburg, Sep. 17 at Three Rivers, Sep. 24 vs Vicksburg, Oct. 1 at Plainwell, Oct. 8 vs. Paw Paw, Oct. 15 at Otsego, Oct. 21 vs. Dowagiac.

Top returning players

Talon Brawley, Quarterback

In eight games, Brawley recorded 177 passing yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 263 yards and three scores.

Julian Means-Flewellen

Means-Flewellen rushed for 493 yards and seven touchdowns, while also catching three passes for 36 yards and two scores last season.

Sam Rucker, linebacker

Rucker recorded a team-high 10 sacks last season for the Vikings.
