MI Dream Home: Historic Grosse Ile colonial has panoramic view of Detroit River

Apr. 10—A historic colonial-style home on Grosse Ile that offers a panoramic view of the Detroit River is on the market.

The asking price for the three-story, 116-year-old house is $799,000.

The house rests on just a little more than an acre of land at 28059 Elba Drive and on the banks of the Detroit River. The property has about 126 feet of waterfront.

Diedre Rivera-Creal, a real estate agent with Moving the Mitten Real Estate & Mortgage in Belleville, said there are a couple of things that make the house unique.

"First, there's the beautiful staircase that leads up to the second floor," said Rivera-Creal, who co-listed the house with Therese Antonelli, Moving the Mitten's owner.

She said the staircase is believed to have come from Detroit's legendary Russell House, a famed hotel located at Woodward and Cadillac Square from 1836 to 1905.

"The other thing is it has a custom-built pub," she said. "It's a room with a bar and built-ins and rustic-looking. It reminds you of an Irish pub."

Rivera-Creal said she thinks one of the house's best features is its oversized living room and adjoining enclosed porch. "You have panoramic views from the living room with a cozy fire place."

Beside the pub and living room, the house also has a large dining room on the main floor.

Upstairs, the master suite, which has a sitting room, dressing room and full bathroom.

"The master suite is back from 1900s when they had a large bedroom, a different area for a changing room and a sitting room and the bathroom," Rivera-Creal said. "You don't see that anymore. Plus, it has a view of the river."

There are also three other bedrooms. One of the rooms has an adjoining full bathroom.

On the floor above that, there's a fifth bedroom and a game room.

"It's a very stately home," Rivera-Creal said. "I think it would be perfect for a growing family because it has five bedrooms, the large lot, the big backyard and the water side. I just see it with a lot of life and a family."

She added the home is also perfect for anyone passionate about boating and the water.

"From the backyard, you could jump on a boat and take a cruise down to Cedar Point or Put-In-Bay," she said. "The accessibility of the water can lead you towards either Ohio or St. Clair Shores."
