Weeks after the closure of Atlantic Beach restaurant Ocean 60, a new Italian restaurant is planned for the site.

Miami-based Salumeria 104, a trattoria-style restaurant specializing in salumi plates and traditional homemade Italian dishes, plans to take over the spot at 60 Ocean Blvd., according to a permanent food service license issued by the state on May 23.

An opening date for the restaurant was not immediately available.

The restaurant will be the third for Salumeria 104, which debuted a decade ago in Miami and added a second restaurant in 2018 in nearby Coral Gables. It’s part of the Graspa Group of Miami-area restaurants that also includes Spris Pizza, Segafredo Café, Esotico Miami and others.

The concept – a fusion of the Italian trattoria and neighborhood salumi, or cured meats, shop – comes from executive chef and co-owner Angelo Masarin and features dishes inspired by his childhood, including some taught to him by his grandmother. Graziano Sbroggio and Carlo Donadoni are also co-owners. | Continue reading

Jacksonville restaurateur Mark Janasik is a busy guy. After opening the fourth location of his Southern Grounds café at JIA earlier this year – and announcing plans for a second airport location – Janasik's next project is already taking shape at Jacksonville Beach.

At the site of the former Campeche Bay and Ruby Beach Brewing, Jax Beach Town Center is under construction. It’s there where Janasik will debut his new concept, Oaxaca Club, inspired by the cuisine and culture of Mexican state of Oaxaca. (The Town Center will also be home to the first Florida location of Alpharetta, Ga.-based Jekyll Brewing.)

Oaxaca Club’s menu will feature Chef Eddy Escriba’s interpretations of the region's authentic and made-from-scratch moles, savory roasted meats, straight-from-the-farm vegetables and artisan mezcal. You may know Escriba’s name from the launches of Burrito Gallery in downtown Jacksonville, Uptown Market in Springfield and Taqueria CINco in Five Points. A fall opening is planned. Read more from Teresa Stepzinski.

Also in the works for Janasik is Alder & Oak, a wood-fired Mediterranean concept planned for Jacksonville and St. Augustine. In Jacksonville, Alder & Oak will join established Janasik concepts Southern Grounds and Blueberry Bakery at The HUB in Brooklyn, a new development that, like Jax Beach Town Center, will feature a rooftop terrace.

Capriotti's planning first Jacksonville sandwich shop

When it comes to sandwich shops, Jacksonville has a few, including Firehouse Subs and Larry’s Giant Subs, both of which got their start right here in our river city.

Quiznos entered the market in the early 2000s, expanded to several locations in the area, all but one (downtown) of which has since closed. In the early 2010s, Jimmy John’s and Jersey Mike’s came to town, opening locations all over the city. Which Wich, too, but has since exited the market.

Now it’s Capriotti’s turn.

The Las Vegas-based chain founded 46 years ago in Wilmington, Delaware, is planning to debut its concept later this year with local franchisees in Mandarin at 10025 San Jose Blvd. In Crown Point Plaza.

The restaurant is known for its 40-year tradition of "slow-roasting whole, all-natural turkeys in house daily" for its turkey subs, including its signature The Bobbie — essentially a Thanksgiving dinner on a sub roll. It's made with freshly oven-roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and mayo. Also on the menu is a variety of other turkey and Italian subs as well as cheesesteaks and even a selection of sandwiches featuring American Waygu.

Teresa Stepzinski has more on Capriotti's plans in Jacksonville.
